Corridor Perspectives says trust, ethical leadership and strong institutions are vital to deeper Africa-Caribbean economic ties

Keypoints:

  • Trust can become a commercial advantage
  • Ethical leadership needs strong institutions
  • Africa-Caribbean economic ties are deepening

TRUST, integrity and stronger institutions must become part of the economic infrastructure supporting deeper Africa-Caribbean relations if the emerging corridor between the two regions is to produce sustainable investment and development.

That was a central message from Episode III of CORRIDOR PERSPECTIVES – LIVE, held on September 11, 2026, under the theme The Importance of Ethical Leadership in Development. The discussion featured Dr Vicki Otaruyina, CEO of The  Africa Guide, and examined how leadership values can influence cross-border business, investment and institutional cooperation.

Trust becomes an economic asset

Otaruyina argued that ethical leadership becomes most important when commercial pressure makes compromise tempting.

‘Leadership isn’t tested when things are easy. It’s often tested in the moments where doing the right thing costs you something,’ she said. ‘For me, ethical leadership means the values I articulate publicly have to govern the decisions I make privately.’

‘Good intentions aren’t systems,’ Otaruyina said, arguing that ethical behaviour needed to be institutionalised through governance, transparency, accountability, procurement controls and meaningful consequences for wrongdoing.

That distinction matters as Africa-Caribbean economic cooperation becomes increasingly formal.

CARICOM marked the fifth Africa-CARICOM Day on September 7, with chairman Philip J. Pierre pointing to the 2024 memorandum between the CARICOM and  African Union secretariats and the growing role of Afreximbank in financing trade, infrastructure and small businesses.

Afreximbank has increased its Caribbean financing ceiling to $5bn, reinforcing the financial architecture behind the relationship. Africa Briefing reported that more than $750m had already been disbursed, with a further pipeline exceeding $2bn.

Culture cannot be taken for granted

Cross-border cooperation also requires greater understanding of different business cultures.

Otaruyina said Africa-Caribbean partnerships needed ‘constant communication and consistent relationship-building because nothing is to be taken for granted’.

Her comments reinforced the programme’s wider argument that cultural tolerance and emotional intelligence are commercial necessities when businesses work across jurisdictions with different expectations.

The stakes are increasing as African capital markets deepen. Dangote Petroleum Refinery opened Africa’s largest IPO on September 14, offering 4.1bn shares as it seeks ₦2.15tn (about $1.6bn) from investors. Proceeds will help finance expansion towards 1.4m barrels per day.

From remittances to ownership

Episode IV of CORRIDOR PERSPECTIVES – LIVE will turn to Beyond Remittances: Building Wealth Through Investment, asking how diaspora capital can move beyond consumption towards businesses, productive assets and ownership.

The issue is increasingly urgent. Africa received more than $95bn in remittances in 2024, while Africa Briefing has argued for credible pathways that convert diaspora wealth into long-term ownership.

Episode III’s message provides an important foundation for that conversation: capital can build a corridor, but trust determines whether people will use it.
