As we come together for Notting Hill Carnival 2026, we should recognise its profound significance to African and Caribbean people in Britain and throughout the world.
Carnival is much more than music, costumes, steelpan, dance and food. It is a powerful expression of heritage, identity, resilience, creativity and community spirit.
For generations, Notting Hill Carnival has provided a unique platform where African and Caribbean cultures meet and celebrate together. While Africa and the Caribbean have distinct histories and identities, we share deep cultural connections through music, rhythm, dance, food, family traditions, storytelling and our strong sense of community.
This shared heritage is at the heart of the work of the African Caribbean Sustainability & Investment Initiative (ACSII). ACSII seeks to strengthen the connections between Africa and the Caribbean, not only through investment, trade and sustainable development, but also through cultural understanding, cooperation and people-to-people relationships.
Cultural unity provides an important foundation for economic cooperation. By recognising what connects us, we can create stronger partnerships between African and Caribbean governments, businesses, institutions, communities and the diaspora.
Notting Hill Carnival is therefore an important reminder that our relationship extends beyond geography. It is about a shared heritage that can become a platform for greater cooperation and prosperity.
This weekend’s programme provides something for everyone:
🌍Saturday, August 29 – Steel Band Competition / Panorama
A celebration of the extraordinary tradition, creativity and musicianship of steelpan.
🌍Sunday, August 30 – Family and Children’s Day
An opportunity for families and the next generation to experience, understand and carry forward our cultural heritage.
🌍Monday, August 31 – Adults’ Day and Main Parade
The spectacular culmination of Carnival, bringing together music, masquerade, dance, sound systems and communities from Britain, the Caribbean, Africa and beyond.
Let us celebrate responsibly
With hundreds of thousands of people expected to participate, we all have a responsibility to look after one another.
Please remain vigilant, behave respectfully and be considerate of other participants, residents, visitors, performers and the emergency services. Stay aware of your surroundings, look after your friends and family, and if someone needs help, offer assistance where appropriate or alert the relevant authorities.
Celebrate the culture. Honour the heritage. Strengthen the connection between #Africa and the #Caribbean. Look after each other.
